6 Thoughts for 2024 from Doc

Not to bombard you with the obligatory new year tips, but here are some quick thoughts for the first day of this new year:

1. Stop the “weathering” effect: Repeated exposure to socioeconomic adversity, political marginalization, racism, and perpetual discrimination can harm health (The CARDIA study, 2019). Recognize where there is too much stress and drama, and change the environment as much as you can….or move.

2. Move something: We may not all be able or have the time to workout 3-5times a week, 30-60min at a time, which is recommended, however, we can get up and move something. Go dancing once a month, move a recumbent bike or under the desk bike into your room and move during breaks, or go to a class once a week to get started.

3. Be real with your weight: Let’s be real. We can’t all be on Ozempic or Wegovy, nor should we all be, however, we all know better and were raised better. You know you shouldn’t eat fast food, drink soda and have zero vegetables every day. Your heart, colon and belly fat all know better. We also all don’t need to lose 100# to be healthy. Just be real with yourself and love your body more. That’s what “healthy” weight is.

4. Be cleaner: At least, wash your pillow cases, head scarves/bonnets and sleep masks every week or couple of weeks. It helps reduce bacteria and skin breakouts and aging. If you’re an overachiever, throw your bedsheets in there, too.

5. Hydrate: You won’t drink the soda or sweet tea, if it’s not in the house, right? Get a fancy, big water cup and keep it filled with ice water and keep it on your bedstand and desk. Shout out to Ric Swiner for teaching me this trick.

6. And, then finally, Release: (my word for 2024) Let it go—past trauma, hurt, unrealistic expectations, rejection, disappointment, grief, pressure on yourself, pressure from others. Throw it all out the window and move on.

Happy New Year everyone!

Love,

Doc 🙂
